Welcome to our blog!

Hello, www grammar experts, soon to become short story authors!

Remember to post at least once a week for the first four weeks' worth of assignments. I'm planning to read short stories and write my thoughts, as well.

I'm looking forward to reading all your observations!

The Necklace

"The story "The Necklace" is set in Paris, France, in the late 1800's. Madame Mathilde Loisel is unhappy with her middle-class life. When her husband gets an invitation to a fancy reception, or party, Madame Loisel gets the chance to experience the life of which she dreams. Then on the night of the reception, something happens that changes her life and that of her husband forever."

The author, Guy de Maupassant, uses place, time and mood very well. The time and place is a French city in the 1800's. At the beginning of the story, the mood is very uplifting. The night of the reception is described with as much enthusiasms as Madame Loisel is feeling. As the plot changes, the mood changes also, to a very dreary mood.

  1. Another good story, with irony. Did you notice the irony of how what she thought would make her rich and happy was actually worthless...a picture of the things we run after and spend ourselves on that have no real value.
